I was born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on April 30 (Walpurgisnacht) 1944, one year exactly before Hitler’s suicide in a Berlin bunker. Thus, the Second World War was always a marker in my perception of the world and a reference point for the peaceful lives that we were subsequently able to live as I grew up in post-war London.
